How to Apply to the Wharton MBA Program: Your Step-by-Step Guide

Landing a spot at Wharton starts with a strategy. We're looking for leaders who combine ambition, analytical rigor, and collaborative spirit. Every component of your application, especially your GMAT score, signals your readiness for Wharton's intense and rewarding MBA experience.

Why the GMAT is Crucial

The GMAT (Focus Edition or legacy versions) is a core element of your application. Wharton evaluates your GMAT as a measure of analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and academic potential. High GMAT scores help distinguish your application in a competitive pool, demonstrating that you're ready to excel in a data-driven, analytical MBA environment.

  • Accepted Test Formats: GMAT (Focus Edition or older), GRE
  • Score Submission: Self-reported scores are accepted initially; official scores required upon admission
  • Testing Options: Online or test center with human proctoring

Tip: List your highest score first when self-reporting, and ensure your test date aligns with your application round.

Application Deadlines

RoundApplication Window
Round 1Sep 3, 2020 - Sep 3, 2025
Round 2Jan 6, 2021 - Jan 6, 2026
Round 3Apr 1, 2021 - Apr 1, 2026
Deferred AdmissionsApr 22, 2021 - Apr 22, 2026

Pro Tip: Plan your GMAT well ahead of deadlines to leave room for retakes if needed.

Step 1: Upload Transcripts

Submit transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate programs. Unofficial transcripts or self-reported grades are accepted for the application, but official transcripts are required upon admission. International transcripts must be submitted via LSAC if applicable.

Step 2: Craft a One-Page, Results-Oriented Resume

Your resume is a chance to showcase growth, leadership, and measurable achievements. Include:

  • Education and awards
  • Work experience with metrics (revenue growth, project scope, impact)
  • Extracurriculars and certifications

Pro Tip: Use bullet points to highlight results, not just responsibilities. Keep it concise—one page only.

Step 3: Write Insightful Essays

Wharton essays help the committee understand your professional vision and personal story.

Essay 1 - Career Goals:

  • Short answer: Immediate post-MBA goal (50 words)
  • Medium answer: Career trajectory over 3-5 years (150 words)

Essay 2 - Community Impact:
Explain how your unique experiences and values will add value to the Wharton community (350 words).

Additional Info Essay (Optional):
Provide context for gaps, weaknesses, or unique circumstances (≤500 words).

Step 4: Secure Strong Recommendations

One professional recommendation is required. Choose someone who can speak to your impact, leadership, and potential. If applying for the Carey JD/MBA, two letters are required through LSAC. Provide your recommender with your resume, essays, and key achievements to maximize their effectiveness.

Step 5: Submit English Language Test Scores (If Applicable)

If your undergraduate degree was not in English, submit results from TOEFL, PTE, IELTS, or Duolingo. Waivers may apply if English was your primary language of instruction.

Step 6: Pay the Application Fee

The non-refundable fee is $275 USD. Fee waivers are available for military personnel or applicants with financial hardship.

Step 7: Prepare for Interviews

Interviews are by invitation only. They assess your analytical ability, teamwork, and cultural fit. For Carey JD/MBA applicants, interviews include team-based discussions and additional law-specific questions.

High-Leverage Tip: The GMAT is the single most quantifiable factor in demonstrating your readiness for Wharton. Prioritize preparation and aim to submit your highest possible score to maximize your competitive advantage.
