How to Apply to the MIT Sloan MBA Program: A Step-by-Step Guide

Your MIT Sloan MBA journey starts here. We are searching for ambitious, analytical, and creative leaders who will make a lasting impact on the world. Your story, experiences, and intellectual curiosity are what set you apart—and your GMAT score is a key part of demonstrating your readiness for this elite program.

Why the GMAT Matters

The MIT Sloan Admissions Committee views the GMAT as a critical component of your application. A strong GMAT score highlights your analytical abilities, problem-solving skills, and academic readiness—qualities that are essential for success in Sloan's rigorous MBA curriculum. Both the GMAT Focus Edition and 10th Edition are accepted, with online and test center options available. Self-reported scores are welcome, but official scores must be submitted by your application deadline.

  • GMAT Focus Edition Total Score: 205-805
  • Previous GMAT Edition Total Score: 200-800
  • GRE scores are also accepted

Submitting a high GMAT score significantly boosts your chances of advancing through the competitive admissions process, making it an essential priority in your MBA preparation plan.

Application Deadlines

Plan ahead. Applications must be submitted by 3:00 PM EST on the deadline date. Decisions are released according to the following schedule:

RoundApplication DeadlineDecision Date
1September 29, 2025December 11, 2025
2January 13, 2026April 2, 2026
3April 6, 2026May 15, 2026

Tip: Reapplicants may apply in any round. LGO applicants must follow LGO-specific deadlines.

Step 1: Craft a Standout Cover Letter

Your cover letter should demonstrate your leadership, creativity, and drive. Keep it professional, concise (≤300 words), and focused on your impact and vision. Address it to the MIT Sloan Admissions Committee and highlight examples that showcase your exceptional abilities.

Step 2: Submit a Results-Focused Resume

Your one-page resume should emphasize measurable achievements rather than just job titles. Include:

  • Education, awards, and professional societies
  • Work experience with results-oriented bullet points
  • Extracurriculars, certifications, and languages

Step 3: Shine in Video Questions

Video Question 1: Introduce yourself to your future classmates (≤60 seconds, single take).
Video Question 2: Answer a randomly generated question to reveal your personality and fit for MIT Sloan culture.

Step 4: Secure Strong Recommendations

  • One professional letter of recommendation (preferably a manager or supervisor)
  • Provide two additional references to support your candidacy if needed

Step 5: Upload Transcripts & Organizational Chart

Ensure your transcripts are legible, official, and translated into English if necessary. Provide a clear organizational chart highlighting your role and reporting lines.

Step 6: Demonstrate Academic Readiness

MIT Sloan values candidates from diverse academic backgrounds. Report relevant coursework and certifications, including:

  • Calculus, Microeconomics, Probability, Statistics
  • Communications, Organizational Behavior
  • CFA, CPA, MITx MicroMasters, MBA Math, or other professional development courses

Step 7: Highlight Your Personal Story

In 250 words, explain how your experiences have shaped who you are today. Share your perspective, challenges, and defining moments that make you unique.

Step 8: Pay the Application Fee

A non-refundable $250 USD fee is required before submission. Fee waivers may be available for Peace Corps members, veterans, and active U.S. military personnel.

Step 9: Prepare for the Interview

Interviews are by invitation only and are a required step. They are conducted virtually and scheduled in Boston time. An invitation signals serious consideration but does not guarantee admission.

Pro Tip: Focus on maximizing your GMAT score early. It is the single most quantifiable way to demonstrate your potential and make your application stand out to MIT Sloan's highly competitive admissions committee.
